Ugliness in the Midst of Change

79 views 3 Comments

Tonight I was reading a post by freerangemom and decided to read the article that was the basis for which she wrote about Politics and Religion. As I read I thought about how really ignorant so many people are and my biggest fear is that many of them are likely “Christians”. Now I have my thoughts on the term “Christians” and for many years now have called myself a “believer, doer and follower of the Word” because I just don’t see, overall, how so many people who say they are Christian and claim to love can harbor such hatred over issues they really don’t get.

Ok, so this posts is not about being a Christian, it is about what I read, so let me get on with it.

I am not shocked at all by the ignorant comments or actions of those who have issues with the United States having an African American President. It was one of the reasons I had wished Obama would not have run or won but he did and I stand proud, elated and unashamed of who I am and Whose I am.  Sure his winning was about way more than him being black, especially when you consider that 61% of the votes he received were from Caucasians (wow- does that say a lot). However, as an African American Woman, every single ceiling created to keep my people trapped has now been shattered and we have no more excuses not to thrive and be all that we can and are called to be. For on the day that Barack Obama became the President-Elect, all men truly were created Equal here in the United States.

While I am not afraid of the spears that will come my way just because I am a black woman and we will soon have a black President; I am afraid for the people who are spewing all this hate, especially if they claim Christ. I am fearful for the children who will become haters as result of having mothers and fathers who blinded by hatred and ignorance. I am fearful for those who smile in my face and speak ugliness behind my back. I am fearful, yes I am, but not for my life because I am covered.

It is so sad to see people stuck in ways that will never get them anywhere. Ways that keep them stuck and afraid of the change that is inevitable and sure to come. Ways that keep them from seeing the beauty of a person’s character and learning to move beyond the color of the skin. Ways that keep them in bondage.

Wow, did I say bondage? Yes I did and that is what it is, there is no other way around it.

It was not my intention to post anything about the Historical election last week but after reading what I did and hearing what I have heard this week, I felt compelled to blog about it.

Let me say this to any racists or those who say “I have friends who are black” just for the sake of being politically correct.

Your lack of understanding and knowledge about a people rich in history, intelligence, love, acceptance, and wisdom will only hurt you. When you fail to understand a person, you shoot yourself in the foot. When you neglect to educate yourself about the truth and share with your children, you shoot yourself in the ass. If you call yourself a Child of God and you fail to use the love and wisdom of God to remove the thought of hating others from your mind and heart, you need to go back to the cross and consider your salvation. Be sure that you are not shooting your way to the place of no return.

For my sister or brother who may have been the victim of ugliness in the midst of change over the last two weeks, let me encourage you to hold your head up high and remember the shoulders upon which you stand. Don’t let the actions of a few mis-educated people steer you from your destiny and by all means do not let it lead you to doing something just as silly as what they do.

    LaTara,

What a great post! It is really sad at some of the backlash that has come about after the election. But I have to say that I think the positive will win out.

What a wonderful country we live in that we have finally been able to cross this line and elect Barack Obama! I can honestly say that even though I have voted in every election I was able to since the age of 18, I was never more proud to vote than on November 4th. It was a really amazing day and I think our country, despite some of the people who choose to express ugliness, is headed in an amazing direction!

I just hope that the other people in childrens’ lives (teachers, coaches and care providers) will be able to lead by example and show kids whose parents may be of the group you are speaking, that our country took a giant leap forward November 4th and there is no looking back! Change is really here.

Thanks LaTara, for bringing up a really important topic.

Hello Latara, I had to Twitter over to read your blog.

Lately, I’ve found my self on the other side of hateful stares, racist comments, ignorant propaganda (where one post I read stated that the youth’s have been brainwashed~Ha! Our youth’s have been undervalued by some classes and they realize it~ people hate the light/truth and will turn it all directions to help their reality).

I’ve tried to process it rationally (don’t ask why), but I know because my God lives that the hatred I experience is not against me, but against the change we’re experiencing. Whether we voted/prayed/wished that Mr. Obama would be our next President, we all were surprised by the overwhelming victory on November 4th.

Any change will bring a string of emotions with it to include shock, disbelief, anger and sometimes hatred of the unknown. The beauty I see in this however is we can embrace our change and enlighten others on the positive side of this much needed change and put our focus on contributing to a solution.

I enjoyed reading the blog and comments.
